Last night I had the opportunity to view the documentary, I am Divine. For those of you who don’t know who Divine is, a quick summary. Divine is a person/alter-ego that is larger than life, originating from the imagination of John Waters, who I idolize, in Baltimore based movies, to main stream media in the 1980’s. Divine was/is an idol for anyone that never fit in or was just different from the rest of the crowd. I know most modern drag queens know her, but I don’t believe the general population today knows of her and the contributions she made, not only to art, but our way of life. The movie trailer is below and I recommend you watch the movies, Female Troubles and Pink Flamingos immediately.

Following the movie the Russian received a Facebook update that the Animator was no longer in a relationship. I’ll be honest, I’ve been waiting for this day for a year. My friends are the most important thing to me, I’ll pretty much skip out on any obligation I can to give my time to them. The Animator has been in a serious relationship for the past year, and in an effort to be a good friend I didn’t get in the way or object, but stood on the sideline, assuming that at some point he would return to the fold.

Showing some tact, I sent a text message asking the Animator to join us for drinks, not because I wanted the dirt, well a little because I wanted the dirt, but because I knew my friend was probably feeling like shit and in need of someone to bitch to. I’m not always a compassionate person, but if there is one thing I’m good for it’s listening and providing snarky and objective advice. The Animator arrived, he, the Russian, Chompy, Larrymore and I had a drink and chatted. Eventually everyone left because they needed to travel to Queens and aren’t massive alcoholics, but the Animator and I remained.

Out of respect I will not share the dirty details he provided me, because he asked me not to, and I keep my word. What I will say is that I think he made the best decision dumping this guy and taking back control of his life. The three things I shared with him after hearing the tale were this: 1) You made the right decision (based on the story). 2) If you ever need a place to stay, my apartment is wide open. 3) Most important, no matter what, I am always here for you to bitch or talk, whatever, there is no judgement, because in reality I’ve probably done worse.

I feel bad for the Animator that things didn’t work out with this guy, but at the same time I’m excited for him to return to our circle and be able to live a normal life outside of the confines of a relationship prison. Now we just need to get him a Late Night.
